Sorry for such a lengthy wait for a new post…thought we’d be through New Hampshire in a quicker fashion (silly :-p). We knew the Whites (Franconia & Presidential Ranges) would be tough and beautiful…and they didn’t disappoint. …

Rock are getting bigger, steeper & wetter…some parts of the trail include embedded helper ladders.

Interesting building in eastern New Hampshire. Doesn’t seem to be getting much use…

Break day swimming in a local creek with people from the Hikers Welcome Hostel at Glencliff…

The hostel’s answer to long toilet lines. You do it in the woods, why not in the backyard?

Looking towards Franconia Range from atop Mt. Moosilauke…our first day in the Whites.

…and to the south…

Tent set up on a platform…

Trails in the Whites are rocky and steep…

Sometimes they have built-in steps…

Sometimes they just go up or down a steep slab of granite…

Yup…up it goes.

Sometimes it’s all roots and mud…

Mossy stream…

Our first White Mtns. Hut (Lonesome Lake), where a weary hiker can relax inside, purchase tasty brownies and soup, or spend over $100/person on room & board (didn’t do it)…

First siting of Mt. Washington from atop South Twin Mountain…

Hikers relaxing and soaking in the beauty…

Alpine zone…

It’s great to be the king…

2nd breakfast…

Haven’t gotten lost yet…

The Mt. Washington Hotel…

Resting on the front porch of one of the huts…

Due to thunder storms on Mt. Washington, we took our rest day in Gorham a few days early. The cleaning crew at the Royalty Inn had a sense of humor…

Even a moose needs a scratch now and then…

Back to it…

Lunar landing…

Lake of the Clouds Hut (just south of Mt. Washington)…

A few Hut caretaker pack-racks. Young seasonal workers haul supplies strapped to these up to the huts a few times each week…

The “lake” at Lake of the Clouds…

Almost to the top of the world…no car needed…

Just another summit…

Collecting scientific data at the Mt. Washington weather station…

Just beautiful…

Pond at Carter Notch, near the northern-most Hut of the Whites…

Blueberries (last day in NH)!

Finally getting ripe (have been watching the plants flower and produce green berries ever since central Pennsylvania)…

Juvenile hawk near it’s nest…mother wasn’t happy with our loitering. Can you identify?

Filtering highly tannic stream water. Tastes better than Wellman water, but looks like iced-tea…
Looks like you are still having a great time. I was climbing Mt. Monadnock in southern N.H. two weeks ago. Picked enough wild blueberries to make 4 blueberry pies. Yum, yum!

Saw this for first time today. Am mailing package to Mom Miller soon. Jess’s hair was flying in the wind at Mt. Washington – straight out, hinting of winter conditions at the same spot. Will look up the juvenile hawk; so many books don’t show the young ones, but Cornell center may help. Seeing Macbeth tonight; during the forests of Dunsinane scenes we’ll picture the New Hampshire valley forests. Mother and Mike

It looked like you were groping that moose, not just scratching it.
