Through the Wilderness to “the Greatest Mountain”…

Our last few weeks within the state of Maine were spent winding around huge ponds and over rolling, tree-filled hills to reach the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail…Mount Katahdin in Baxter State Park. Luck was with us and very little rain fell during this period, making the sometimes mud-filled trail not so difficult. Mount Katahdin itself was spectacular…

Will this be enough food to get us through the 100 Mile Wilderness? No problem!

13 miles in to the "wilderness" we encountered a "trail magic" sign pointing 1/4 mile down a seemingly empty forest service road to a hunting cabin, where this gentleman and his buddy have periodically been treating hikers to food & drinks. BBQ Chicken and pie are not things normally encountered so far from civilization...

  1. So lucky you had a dry year; Mike and i have seen video of a wet year, and it is completely different, with walks on logs to ford shoulder-high streams. The greatest Kiss photo on the Greatest mountain. We’re packing now.
